Frank Joseph Malina (October 2, 1912 – November 9, 1981) was an American aeronautical engineer and painter. He was a pioneer in early rocketry and a renowned educator.
Education and Career
Malina earned his Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University in 1934 and later received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in 1940. His doctoral thesis, “Characteristics of the rocket motor and flight analyses of the sounding rocket,” was supervised by Theodore von Kármán.
Malina served as an assistant professor at Caltech from 1942 to 1946, where he continued his research in rocket propulsion and sounding rockets. He was a key figure in the development of rocketry, alongside von Kármán and others, including Jack Parsons and Qian Xuesen.
Awards and Legacy
In recognition of his contributions to astronautics education, the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) established the Frank J. Malina Astronautics Medal in 1986. The medal is awarded annually to an educator who has demonstrated excellence in promoting the study of astronautics and related space sciences.
Personal Life
Malina was born in Brenham, Texas, to Czech immigrants. He was a talented painter and artist, combining his passion for science and art throughout his life.
Death
Frank Joseph Malina passed away on November 9, 1981, at the age of 69, due to a heart attack in Paris, France.
